Careers in Construction

The youth is our future.  In my time in the construction industry, I have been supporting trades programs for our high school students to encourage more construction-based careers.  I love that here in Colorado Springs they are promoting the same thing, and I look forward to becoming more involved in this program as well.  Below is an article from the Housing & Building Association of Colorado Springs with more information on their Careers in Construction program.

“Careers in Construction was launched in 2015 to help young people connect with construction trade education in the Pikes Peak and Southern Colorado regions. Careers in Construction (CIC) was piloted by the Housing & Building Association of Colorado Springs to support vocational education at area high schools and colleges – and to encourage our allies in the construction industry to join us in creating well-paying career opportunities while helping their industries.

Careers in Construction is largely supported by the construction industry through a funding mechanism called the Building Futures Fund. Hundreds of students in the Pikes Peak region are learning construction career skills through CIC-supported classroom education. Learn more about ways you can support the program.

Program Goals

  • To show teens across the Pikes Peak region – as well as their families, educators and community leaders – the value of learning a trade, both for the satisfaction of building something and the career and educational opportunities it can lead to later in life.
  • To offer job, internship, and apprentice opportunities for young people who want careers in the trades.
  • To engage our fellow businesses in supporting this valuable program, addressing the shortage of skilled tradespeople in Colorado, and helping the construction industry grow.

Forward Momentum
In March of 2018, the HBA announced the launch of an expanded regional campaign to promote Careers in Construction, funded by a grant from the Colorado Department of Labor & Employment. The grant’s purpose is to build on the success of the program.

The initiative includes a newly launched website (, which will be the nerve center for a region-wide multimedia campaign encouraging teens to sign up for shop class and learn about opportunities in trade careers, while also serving as a job placement platform for students and employers looking for skilled trade employees. The campaign also aims to expand the program into new schools while winning more support from local construction and trade businesses.”
